May 07 - Waseca -- Waseca did what no one else has done this year--won two of three doubles matches against New Ulm. It helped Waseca top New Ulm, 5-2 in South Central Conference action. Waseca is now 5-0 in the SCC while New Ulm fell to 3-1 with a match against Fairmont to go.

New Ulm came very close to winning the conference for the first time ever. Instead, Waseca won the conference for the fourth time in five years. The weather for the match was windy, but the weather allowed the match to be completed.

Sam Conway won at #1 singles, but not easily. John Hildebrandt had his serve going, and Sam struggled to control it often enough to break Hildebrandt. In a match that turned out to be the deciding match, Sam pulled it out, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Eighth grader Pete Swanson came up big for Waseca, winning 6-4, 6-3 over New Ulm senior Jimmy Vancura, 6-4, 6-3. At #2 singles, Eagle John Witt quickly went up on Tyler Kolpin 4-1, but Kolpin lifted his steady game to win 12 of the next 13 games, winning 7-5, 6-0. Kolpin is now 13-1 on the year. At #3 singles, New Ulm won its only singles match on the day, with Matt Olson cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Spencer Broughten.

In doubles, the big story was at #2, where New Ulm's Tim Hellendrung and Nick Johnson were beaten for the first time this year, losing to Colby Swanson and Shane Milbrath in 3 sets, including 4-6 in the third. So far this year, Waseca's #2 doubles has been its weakest, but rose to the occasion. At #1 doubles, Andrew Somers and Trent Chesley won over Troy Fenske and Scott Hofmeister, 6-3, 7-5. At #3 doubles, New Ulm got its only doubles victory, with Joel Runck and John Christensen staying undefeated in doubles by topping Reid Miller and Eric Vanderstelt, 7-6, 6-1.

Waseca won as many doubles matches (2) in the match, as New Ulm has lost all year.

Thanks to Steve Conway for notes on this match. Thanks to Bob & Barb Hildebrandt for handing out rosters.
