The Mankato JETS picked up 2 victories out of 16 matches, playing perennial state power Rochester.  Though the match was a tough one for the JETS , many lessons were learned including how far the Mankato area tennis has come as well how far it still has to go to reach the higher ranks of Minnesota state boys' and girls' tennis.

Play began just after 12:30 till past 3 o'clock on the Plexipave courts of the Rochester Indoor Tennis Club.  Boys' singles and girls' doubles were played first followed by girls' singles and boys' doubles before finishing up with mixed doubles.

Sam McCullough and Evan Meyer had the lone victories for the JETS at #3 and #4 singles, respectively.

JETS Coach Gerard Schwarz said of his team, "I'm really happy the JETS were able to play tough competition right off the bat.  We had a tough but fruitful first outing.  Playing Rochester will  helps us find errors in our game--errors we can fix.  It will definitely help our kids.  The JETS are off and running.  If it was the end, I'd be disappointed, but this is the beginning.  This will raise the level of our kids to new heights of tennis and excellence.  It's never easy or fun to lose, but it's great to be there at the start of something you know is going to be special and life-changing."

Girls playing for the JETS included Kelsey Mueller of St. James (#3 singles, #2 doubles), Jill Bailey (#3 singles Belle Plaine), LeAnn Ketelsen (#2 doubles Waseca), and Whitney Olsen (#3 singles, #3 doubles Mankato East).  Boy players for the JETS included Zach Nordby of St. James (#1 doubles, #2 singles last year),  Evan Meyer (#4 singles, #2 doubles Mankato East), Jonathan Lee (#1-7th-8th grade New Ulm now at Mankato East), and Sam McCullough (#2 singles junior varsity Mankato West).

Boys playing for Rochester included Josh Tomachek (#3 singles Rochester Mayo), Drew Tomachek (#4 singles Mayo), Tyler McKay (#4 singles Rochester John Marshall), and Will Teasdale (7th grader this year at Mayo).  Girls playing for Rochester included Annie Richie (#3 singles at Rochester John Marshall last year and USTA-ranked), Kristina Alexander (#1 singles - JV, #1 doubles - JV at Rochester Lourdes), Ellie Teasdale (#4 singles at Mayo), and Julie Reader (#2 and #3 singles and #1 doubles at Lourdes).

Though the team lost, progress was made.  Coach Schwarz said, "We're definitely seeing gains in the games of many of our players.  Simple mistakes are fewer than they were and even though the scores don't reflect it yet, the doubles play by our players has improved greatly.  Some of our JETS played the best tennis I've ever seen them play.  That will eventually show up as wins as well as just being more confident on the court."

Schwarz listed some of the benefits of the JETS when he said "We get to travel as a team, be a team, suffer and excel as a team.  The JETS doesn't cost as much as playing USTA tournaments and we still get in alot of tennis against good players.  Where else do you get to play singles, doubles, and mixed doubles--all against players of similar ability?  We look for the JETS to grow and be one of the most important additions to area tennis."

The JETS next match is at Owatonna on Saturday.
