Mankato Athletic Tennis Center offers numerous summer tennis programs for juniors and adults

Summer 2001 Junior Lessons

More MATC summer programs are coming soon including low-cost adult clinics and summer camps that we guarantee will be the best you’ll ever attend!  Check back soon!

If your son or daughter is planning on playing high school or junior high tennis this year, consider group lessons over a camp--not that camps can't be great tools, but group lessons taken over time keeps the players in top shape all the time rather than for just a few days if what is taught at the camp is not put into action.

(See the Mankato Community Services Program Guide for more MATC-led summer adult and junior tennis lessons, tournaments, and matchmates--the Mankato area tennis players connection)

* Not Saturday, June 23rd – MATC Bend of the River Junior Tournament *
Prices subject to change without notice

Any players in the above classes may take up to two 1-hour private lessons for 40% off the regular MATC prices—meaning the players may receive a 1-hour lesson from a certified pro for just $19.80 or $22.20—try to find that anywhere else in the country!  Regular prices are $37 each for non-members and $33 for MATC members. We especially recommend this for JV and Varsity players as a way to review their game and more easily set their individual goals at the start of the summer, and review and assess the accomplishment of those goals at the end of the summer.

CLASS STRUCTURE

The Mankato Athletic Tennis Center is dedicated to raising the level of junior tennis in the Mankato area.  Tennis requires patience and dedicated, disciplined work to improve.  We know we can help improve your game—with your help we can make you great.

Each class will be a mix of skills, drills, and play.  Individual skills will be given, reviewed, put into action in drills, then used in game situations.  Each day a one page sheet will be given to help aid the player’s development of the skill.

Players will be tested at the end of the session to see what they have achieved in the class.  Players will receive medals of participation as well as a written skills assessment, a player photo in action, and a USTA tennis rule book.

Tenny Tots (Ages 4 to 7)

Tenny Tots classes will focus on hand-eye coordination, games, and fun – as much as on tennis.  This is a great age to get your kid used to the tennis court, the racquet, etc. as well as aid in the development of their coordination.

Stars (Ages 8 to 11)

Stars will start off with the basics of forehand, backhand, volleys, and serve strokes—using them in a mini-tennis format of playing.  Kids will also learn to hit overheads, lobs, as well as how to keep score and proper sportsmanship.

Rising Stars (Ages 12+)

Rising Stars will quickly review the tennis basics, fixing flaws in individual strokes.  Rising Stars will play full court tennis and learn what shot to hit in a given situation as well as more advanced strokes of drop volleys, slice, and topspin strokes.

All Stars (Junior Varsity) & Super Stars (Varsity)

All Stars and Super Stars will spend ½ hour warming up and doing plyometrics to increase their racquet speed, wrist strength, quicken their movement, and get them ready for the competition they will face in high school.  Strokes will be reviewed and many situational drills will take place—emphasizing proper stroke selection, percentage tennis, and attacking tennis.  Players can expect to increase the speed of their serve, their serving percentage, strengthen their weaknesses, learn the best times for attacking, anticipate strokes better, and learn the general tenants of high school tennis—what wins and what loses high school matches.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

It is our goal at MATC to make all players winners--on and off the court--and to raise the level of all junior players throughout the area.  Tennis is a sport players can enjoy their entire lives--and we help make it fun and easy to learn.  We emphasize fundamentals through proven progressions--providing each student with a strong foundation of skills that they can add their own signature to.  We believe each student must have individual attention to become their best and aim to help them set and then accomplish challenging but achievable goals.  Players are rewarded with Junior Achievement certificates and ribbons upon passing tests of their capabilities.

MATC offers a wide variety of programs for juniors including Group Lessons, Private Lessons, Membership, Discounted Court Time, Junior Open Courts, Unlimited Weekend Junior Play, Junior Singles Ladders, the JETS travelling teams, and much more.  We're confident we can help your child become better and enjoy the lifetime sport of tennis.
